Sustainable Surfcraft 2015
This project looked at the impact of the surf industry on our ocean environment. For one week students learned about a number of human impacts on the environment and our oceans, and all the innovative ways in which creative people are working to solve these problems. Students designed and made bodysurfing "Handplanes, Paipos (Hawaiian Belly Board), and Alaias (wooden finless surfboards) using up cycled and recycled wood and sustainably harvested Paulownia wood, and in the process studied some basic fluid dynamics and design thinking. The week consisted of working in the shop, and having guest speakers from H2O Trash Patrol, Ed Lewis of Enjoy Handplanes come and work with and present to the students. At the end of the week students tested their prototypes at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas CA, where they also did a massive beach cleanup and even helped to rescue a Seal Pup. Please enjoy our video shot and produced by one of our 10th grade students throughout the week.
